In an exciting and historic event, two endangered North Atlantic right whales have been spotted swimming just off the coast of Destin, Florida. While our team here at AJ’s focuses on dolphin cruises and snorkeling adventures, we couldn’t help but share this incredible news happening right in our backyard!
The two whales — adult females named Koala and Curlew — have been observed swimming in the shallow coastal waters near Destin. This rare appearance has sparked amazement among both locals and scientists, as right whales are typically found along the Atlantic seaboard, not in the Gulf.
Meet Koala and Curlew: The Whales Near Destin, FL
Koala is a 16-year-old right whale named for the koala bear-shaped white patch on the top of her head. Curlew is 14 years old and recognized by a scar on her back shaped like the beak of a curlew shorebird. Both whales were believed to be pregnant earlier this year when spotted off the Atlantic coast, though no calves have been observed with them yet.
Neither Koala nor Curlew has previously been documented in the Gulf, making their appearance off Destin even more extraordinary. These females are approximately 40 feet long and maintain a low profile when resting near the surface making them a high risk for boating strikes.
Why This Whale Sighting Near Destin, Florida Matters
North Atlantic right whales are critically endangered, with fewer than 370 individuals remaining in the world. Their usual migration path runs between calving grounds off the Southeastern U.S. and feeding grounds in the North Atlantic — so their presence this far west in the Gulf is highly unusual.
Biologists are closely monitoring Koala and Curlew through aerial surveys. Encouragingly, both whales appear healthy. However, their unexpected location has raised concerns about potential navigational challenges or environmental changes impacting their migratory habits.
How to Identify a Right Whale Off the Destin Coast
If you’re out enjoying the beautiful Emerald Coast waters, here are a few tips to help you recognize a right whale:
- Size: Can grow up to 52 feet long and weigh as much as 140,000 pounds.
- Color: Shiny black skin, sometimes with lighter belly patterns.
- Shape: Stocky bodies with no dorsal fin and wide, paddle-shaped flippers.
- Movement: Swim just below or at the surface.
- Blow: Distinct V-shaped blow when surfacing.
- Head: Rough patches (callosities) on their heads, appearing light due to small organisms called cyamids.
What to Do If You Spot a Whale in Destin Waters
While seeing a right whale would be unforgettable, it’s essential to prioritize their safety and well-being. Here’s what NOAA Fisheries recommends:
- Keep your distance: Stay at least 500 yards away — it’s the law.
- Report sightings: Call (877) WHALE-HELP (942-5343) and share the time, location, and any photos if possible.
- Slow down: Boaters should operate at 10 knots or less in areas where whales have been spotted.
- Avoid disturbing: Right whales are fasting during migration. Human disturbance can threaten their survival.
